Tags are transparent pixels, images or snippets of Javascript code placed on Web properties to facilitate the tracking, analysis and reporting of visitor behavior. Tag management systems allow marketers to document, deploy, test and manage these tracking elements on Web properties with little or no involvement from IT. Tags detect device and browser type and track pages visited, whether the visitor has visited the site previously, and which links, pages or other Web sites the visitor came from. Additionally, tags are used to add third-party content to a Web property and for advertising, retargeting, conversion, multi-channel personalization and online chat. Tag management systems reduce the time it takes for marketing to add or remove tags from Web properties by decreasing or eliminating the need for developers to write and load code on Web properties. These systems also improve a Web page’s performance (e.g. load times).
